MUSICAL ALASKA

MUSICAL ALASKA #20
CURATED BY RAINBOW CHAN

5PM SUNDAY 24 AUGUST

Singer, producer and saxophonist extraordinaire, the enigmatic Rainbow Chan ventures to the depths of the carpark to curate Musical Alaska #20, exploring her own Hong Kong-Chinese heritage transfixed in sound. “Fourth World" music was a term coined by American trumpeter and composer Jon Hassell to describe ‘the possibility of music in global terms beyond First World, beyond Third World, beyond High-Tech Art classical, beyond pop’ and his philosophy of creating imaginative, hybridised world music is suggested in the sound of several Japanese post-punk bands in the 1980s.

The Alaska Orchestra will perform new arrangements of works by Japanese underground bands Mariah, Haruomi Hosono and Mkwaju Ensemble by Rainbow herself, before a specially commissioned set of her own music titled Tracing, made under the moniker Chunyin. Tracing is a semi-improvised piece which attempts to represent Rainbow's experience as someone with a cross-cultural identity. Electronics, chopped and screwed Chinese music samples and live instrumentation will be amalgamated into one continuous feedback loop. As the loop develops and distorts, it poses that remembering, forgetting and supplanting are integral to an immigrant's sense of self and place.
